Religion. It is one of the most controversial topics in our nation. Our forefathers already knew the potential for religious oppression and division. They considered this when they wrote the First Amendment to the Constitution, which states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
The Establishment Clause prohibits Congress from establishing one religion as the mandated religion of the United States of America. Meaning, this is not a Christian Nation, Islamic Nation, or any other religious sect. We are a free nation.
The Free Exercise Clause further protects this right. We the people, are free to practice whatever belief structure we see fit. Whether it is Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Taoism, Satanism or none at all. Yes, we are also protected from religion. We have the right to be atheist, agnostic or non-denominational. No matter your belief system, it is respected and welcomed. Our fundamental beliefs are personal and sacred. No law and no person has the right to dictate this decision for us. Diversity plays an intricate role in what makes this county so great. This includes diversity of cultures and beliefs.
Americas strength has always laid in our diversity of culture, our beliefs, and our history. Without diversity we are not America. If we are not America, then who are we???
